The sun and moon,
They sing a tune,
In the depths of the cold winter’s night.
Be still my sweet,
For in dreams we shall meet,
Until we both wander in the light
.”

Spectre latched his porthole for the night, golden brown eyes growing heavy from the endurance his day had brought him. It had been yet another failed attempt of regaining his redemption, and being able to travel into the light to be with his beloved family. Far too long had he been stranded on this forsaken island, and by now, he frankly had witnessed enough.

Climbing into the hammock that had been set up for him to sleep in, Spectre allowed it to sway back and forth beneath his weight, eyes focused on the shifting shadows above him. There was no trace of light within his cabin now that darkness had crept upon the land.

There is no light anywhere,” he thought to himself as he rolled over, eyes growing heavy as they closed, encompassing his world in an even greater darkness. “…not anymore…

The dimness continued to glide across the walls of the cabin, leading Spectre into a deep slumber. He couldn’t remember ever feeling this tired. Nevertheless, the thoughts soon crept from his head as his own memoirs drifted in. Once he was deep in his slumber, he could have sworn he’d heard someone slipping across his room. Yet, since he had been heavily asleep, part of him began to deny it. It was only when he heard a soft woman’s voice did his body tingle as a chill was sent down his spine.

Desi.

Spectre grunted softly, attempting to open an eye, but nevertheless, he failed to do so. Something kept him dreaming…

Desi,” the voice whispered again, this time, the captain beginning to see the image of a young woman before him, her long brunette hair flowing into her sapphire eyes.

“…Elizabeth?”

Spectre choked her name out softly, wanting to be able to reach out and touch her- to see if she were real. He had gone far too long without seeing his wife, that he began to feel that this was only a trick of the mind- a vision his tired mind had brought on to help him escape the day.

Desi,” the woman repeated, this time looking him in the eyes with her piercing blue pair, “I’ve waited far too long now.”

“I’m trying, Elizabeth,” Spectre whispered, feeling a twinge of pain tug at his heart strings, “honest I am. I have longed for nothing else… to be with you again… that is all I have to keep dreaming.”

Spectre swore he felt her hand brush gently under his chin, raising his head up as she smiled down upon him. Her sapphire eyes glittered as he looked him over- the sight of them one that he had thought to never see again. Tenderly running a hand down the side of his face, Elizabeth smiled slightly from the corner of her mouth, tilting her head as she continued to stare down upon him.

But we are together,” she whispered, Spectre raising an eyebrow to her slightly, her image in his mind almost beginning to glow. “Never once have we been apart. Though I may not physically be able to see you, or touch you… I am always here; in your dreams. I just wander in a different world than you now… we are like the sun and moon. I live in the light while you live in the dark- but one day- one day, Desi… we will both be part of the light.

Spectre blinked slowly at that, feeling her lips gently press against his forehead, fingers tangling within his thick locks of raven hair as she stroked them back. He shuddered slightly, looking one final time into her eyes- now filled with tears- as she managed to whisper.

…I love you…

Spectre’s eyes popped open as he sat up swiftly in his hammock. Once more, darkness was all that surrounded him, no sign of Elizabeth to be found. Sighing heavily, he ran his fingers through his hair, leaning back as he gazed up to the ceiling, once more watching the shadows shift. Darkness appeared to be all that comforted him anymore… he had come so far from the light. Yet, in lying in his swaying hammock, he could have sworn that he heard humming somewhere- coming from the shoreline; and out his window, far down the beach, there was a faint light- the light of his hope.

“Elizabeth…,” he whispered with a choke, watching as it dimmed, fading into the heavens.

The sun and moon,
They sing a tune,
In the depths of the cold winter’s night.
Be still my sweet,
For in dreams we shall meet,
Until we both wander in the light.

Prompt #2 "The Sun and Moon- They Sing a Tune" for :iconprompt-a-day:

I actually am quite proud of this piece. Not the written aspect, I think I could have done better, but the story. I think it worked out quite nicely^^
Anyway, these are two characters from my novel-- Spectre and Elizabeth-- and if you understand the story behind the novel, then you will understand this piece. Basically, Spectre was banished to an island purgatory for eternity, until he can repent for his sins and be forgiven, and then he will finally be able to enter the light and be with his wife. (there's more to it than that-- that was just a brief summary) Anyway, I quite like how this one turned out.
